Joe Niemela - President
Joseph Niemela is a Senior Research Scientist Emeritus at the Abdus Salam ICTP, and is an Advisor on International Programmes and Applied Physics. Previously he headed the ICTP Office of External Activities, its Applied Physics Group, as well as its Training and Research in Italian Laboratories (TRIL) programme. He has served as ICTP Liaison to UNESCO’s science sector, as well as an Observer on both the IAEA Standing Advisory Group on Nuclear Applications (SAGNA) and the SESAME Council. He is an elected Vice President of the International Commission for Optics, representing the United States, and served as Global Coordinator of the UNESCO International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies 2015. He is a Member of the Scientific Council of Centro Fermi in Rome, and is Chair of both the European Physical Society’s Physics for Development Group and the TWAS Research Grants Committee for Physics. Among his honors, he the 2017 recipient of the Dwight Nicholson Medal of the American Physical Society and the Galileo Galilei Silver Medal from the Italian Physical Society in 2015. He received a European Physical Society Service Award in 2014, the Educator of the Year Award in 2011 from the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE) and was awarded an I.B.M. Fellowship for postdoctoral work at the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1987. He is an elected Fellow of the American Physical Society.
